Alonso Brace Hands Chelsea Derby Win Over Tottenham
Marcos Alonso’s double reignited Chelsea’s title defense by securing a 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Sunday at the Wembley stadium.
With Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas suspended, Conte opted to field the half-fit Tiemoue Bakayoko in a midfield three with N’Golo Kante and David Luiz, bringing young Andreas Christensen and summer signing Antonio Rudiger into the back line.
Tottenham had been well placed to salvage a draw when Alonso’s first-half free kick was canceled out by Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi, who headed home a tantalizing cross from midfield sensation Erickson.
Batshuayi inadvertently heading the ball into his own net in the 82nd minute just after coming off the bench.
But within six minutes Chelsea was back in front and Batshuayi’s blushes were spared. Lloris threw the ball out to Victor Wanyama and Pedro Rodriguez disposed the Tottenham midfielder before sending a low pass to the path of Wing back, Marcos Alonso who made no mistake with the execution.
