AIT, Silverbird TV, others lose operating licences over mounting debt

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has revoked licenses of the African Independent Television (AIT)/Raypower FM, Silverbird Television (STV) and 50 broadcast radio and television stations in the country over a whooping debt.

The NBC Director-General, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah announced the development at a press conference on Friday.

He disclosed that the affected stations owe the Commission a total of N2.6bn, just as they have failed to renew their licences since 2015.

Ilelah ordered the stations to shut down operations in the next 24 hours, directing NBC offices nationwide to collaborate with the security agencies to ensure immediate compliance.

Asides from AIT and STV, other affected stations include Zuma FM, Suleja, Niger State, Bomay Broadcasting Service L.td., Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Gombe, Lagos, Osun, Ogun, Ondo and Rivers States Broadcasting Corporations and Stations.

Also listed were Katsina Broadcasting Corporation, Kaduna State Broadcasting Corporation, Jigawa Broadcasting Corporation, Kebbi State Broadcasting Corporation, Zamfara State Broadcasting Corporation and Yobe State Broadcasting Corporation.

The rest are Imo State Broadcasting Corporation, Anambra State Broadcasting Corporation, Cross River State Broadcasting Corporation, Bayelsa State Broadcasting Corporation, Borno State Broadcasting Corporation and Crowther FM Abuja.
