Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from the Federal Executive Council in the coming days after securing approval to contest the Oyo State governorship election.
The planned resignation follows a meeting between Adelabu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the minister formally presented his intention to pursue the 2027 governorship race.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, the President granted his consent, clearing the way for Adelabu to step down from office.
“In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming days,” the statement said.
During the meeting, Adelabu reportedly presented a detailed report on his stewardship of the power sector over the past two and a half years, highlighting efforts to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity and implement reforms across the sector.
A major highlight of the engagement was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, aimed at providing a long-term roadmap for Nigeria’s energy sector.
Sources say the timing of his resignation is intended to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms, particularly amid challenges such as fluctuating power generation linked to gas supply constraints and infrastructure issues.
Adelabu’s planned exit is also in line with a directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to step down ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His resignation is expected to mark another significant change within the Federal Executive Council as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the next election cycle.
