7 things to know about Dr Obadiah Mailafia, ex-CBN deputy governor

The news of the passing of Dr Obadiah Mailafia, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Sunday, sent shock waves across the country.

Blackbox Nigeria had earlier reported that the 64-year-old breathed his last at midnight after a brief illness at the National Hospital, Abuja.

Here are 7 things to know about the late economist.

1. He was born December 24, 1956 in Sanga Local Government, Kaduna State.

2. For his tertiary education, he attended Ahmadu Bello University, University of Oxford and Oriel College, Oxon where he graduated top of his class.

3. From 2001 to 2005, Mailafia served as a chief economist in the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Department of the African Development Bank Group.

3. Between May 5, 2005 and March 26, 2007, Mailafia was the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

4. From 2010 to 2015, he was the Chief of Staff of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), the 79-nation multilateral development institution based in Brussels, Belgium.

5. In 2018, he began partisan politics amid the rising killings in Southern Kaduna. Mailafia was the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2019 elections.

6. He was a government critic who was popular for tackling President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

7. He was an ace columnist for The Vanguard Newspaper. A public intellectual, he wrote over 10 publications and journals.
