2027: Obi, Kwankwaso Join NDC after dumping ADC

Nigeria’s opposition landscape is witnessing a major shake-up as Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), following their exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The two political heavyweights were reported to have arrived at the Abuja residence of NDC leader Seriake Dickson on Sunday for high-level talks ahead of their formal declaration.

Sources indicate that both leaders have already concluded plans to defect, with their visit marking a decisive step toward aligning with the emerging political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi, a former Anambra State governor, confirmed his departure from the ADC, citing internal crises, division and what he described as a “toxic” political environment within the party, BlackBox Nigeria reported.

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, is also said to have secured backing from his political base, the Kwankwasiyya movement, to proceed with the switch as part of broader efforts to reposition for 2027.

The anticipated move is expected to significantly boost the NDC, a relatively new platform seeking to consolidate opposition forces and challenge the dominance of the ruling party.

Analysts say the convergence of Obi’s grassroots support and Kwankwaso’s northern political structure could reshape the opposition landscape if fully realised, especially as parties and alliances continue to shift ahead of the next election cycle.

Both politicians are expected to formally address the media after concluding consultations with NDC leadership.
