Manchester United came from behind to defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1 on Saturday, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice to secure the Snapdragon Cup in an encouraging pre-season display.
The Red Devils responded strongly after conceding an early goal, producing a dominant performance to overturn the deficit and claim the trophy ahead of the new campaign.
Atletico Madrid took the lead in the fifth minute when Arnau Ortiz found space to beat goalkeeper Tom Heaton with a well-placed finish at the far post.
United drew level after Shea Lacey was brought down inside the penalty area, allowing Cameroon international Mbeumo to calmly convert from the spot.
The forward completed the comeback in the second half after Jack Fletcher won possession on the right flank, finishing clinically to hand United the lead.
Morten Hjulmand also came close to adding a third goal but struck the post late in the contest.
Speaking after the match, Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick praised his players’ performance and highlighted the team’s progress during pre-season.
“I enjoyed it. There was a lot of good in the things we are looking to improve on. Building on what we did over the last seven months, there are a lot of positive signs for us,” Carrick told MUTV.
He also commended the balance between the experienced players and the club’s young talents.
“There were a lot of positives to take from the game, both individually and collectively. The senior players looked strong and fit, while the younger players did really well and made an impact.
“The spirit and camaraderie within the squad are so important. It’s great to see the players enjoying each other’s company, and collectively we looked strong as a team.”
Carrick added that the extended break had refreshed the squad and expressed optimism ahead of the new season.
“It is a great group to work with, and that’s what made today especially pleasing. We had six-and-a-half weeks away from the players, which is longer than I’m used to, but we’re enjoying the work and looking forward to the season.
“This is something to build on as we continue to develop and push forward.”
