Weeks after stepping down as Super Eagles coach, George takes new job

Finidi George, the former head coach of the Super Eagles, has been officially unveiled as the new head coach of Rivers United, weeks after his resignation from the national team.

According to The Nations, George signed a two-year deal, and the unveiling ceremony took place at Rivers United’s secretariat in Port Harcourt.

The 54-year-old will now lead the former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, following Stanley Eguma’s departure towards the end of the previous season.

Rivers United, who finished eighth in the NPFL last season, aims to utilize the expertise of the former Ajax winger, who led the team to the NPFL title in the 2022/2023 season.

George’s appointment comes shortly after his resignation from the Super Eagles, citing the Nigerian Football Federation’s decision to hire a foreign Technical Adviser as the reason.

His departure followed Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Benin and a 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
