A group of local vigilantes, known as Yan Ba Beli, were attacked and killed by some armed bandits in the Local Government Areas of Bauchi state on Sunday.

According to PLATFORM TIMES, the vigilantes were on patrol when they fell into the trap of the bandits, who had superior weapons and firepower.

A source from the vigilante group, who wished to remain anonymous, said that nine of his colleagues were killed on the spot and many others were injured in the ambush.

He said, “The bandits opened fire on us as soon as we entered their territory. They had more guns and bullets than us. We tried to fight back, but we were outnumbered and overpowered. Nine of our men died instantly and others were wounded.”

He added that the bodies of the slain vigilantes were recovered and buried at the site of the attack according to Islamic rites on Monday morning.

The incident was confirmed by the Caretaker Chairman of Ningi LGA, Ibrahim Mato, who condemned the killings as barbaric and assured that the government would do everything possible to protect lives and property.

The Bauchi State Police Command could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
