UBA Foundation announces national essay contest — all you need to know

UBA Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has announced the call for entries for the 2021 edition of its annual National Essay Competition (NEC) in Nigeria.

This was contained in statement by the bank’s Head of External & Media Relations at UBA, Ramon Nasir, stating that the NEC has been rolled out in four other countries where UBA operates.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer at UBA Foundation, Mrs. Bola Atta, has said that the Foundation scaled up the prizes for the second year in a row in order to accommodate the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and also the fluctuation in the currency levels.

Here are basic information you should know about the competition.

Target
The competition is targeted at Senior Secondary Students in Nigeria and it is a part of UBA
Foundation’s education initiative majorly aimed at
promoting the reading culture; encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

Essay Topic
What is the role of technology in educating the African youth?

Selection Criteria/Eligibility
Applicants must:
-Be a Secondary School Student;
– Submit a handwritten essay (750 words MAX);
– Submit a passport photograph;
– Submit a copy of a birth certificate, National ID or passport.

Selection Process
– Entries received for the competition will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Nigerian Universities, who will then shortlist 12 essays for further assessement.

– Afterwards, a second round of competition will involve the 12 finalists who will write a second supervised essay from which three best essays will be selected as the overall winners from the 12 finalists emerged from the first round of the competition.

How To Apply
– Applicant must submit their completed contact information (Name, Age, School, Address of school, Telephone Number, Residential Address and Email Address).

– Applicants must attach photocopies of their original birth certificates or international passport data page.

Scholarship Awards
The awards come in 3 categories namely:

1. The first prize for the UBA National Essay
Competition is a N3 million educational grant,

2. The second Prize is a N2.5 million educational
grant.

3. The 3rd Prize is a N2 million educational grant.

Note: All these prizes are funded, to any African University of their choice.
