Super Eagles get heroes’ welcome, receive national honours conferment from President Tinubu

Every member of the Nigerian squad at the just concluded AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast have now been conferred with a National Honour.

The players will now be referred to a Members of the Order of Niger (MON).

This conferment follows the hero’s welcome given to the silver winning squad in the council chambers of the state house earlier on Tuesday.

Received by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Super Eagles players were commended for their dedication to their fatherland which saw them get to the final of the continental competition. The Nigerian side lost to the host nation Ivory Coast on Sunday.

“It is not easy to absorb a loss, particularly when the expectations are high. But you have demonstrated sportsmanship, resilience, and teamship throughout the entire tournament. That is what AFCON stands for, the unity and resilience of the continent. You have done a great job, and I am very proud of you,” the President was quoted to have said in a statement by his spokesperson.

President Tinubu decorated each member of the team with MON lapel pins, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, distributed forms for the allocation of a plot of land to each of the players.
