In any war, including anti-corruption war, strategy is very crucial. When the DSS broke into judges quarters on October 6, 2016 and embarked on media razzmatazz, l said then that the whole proposed trial had been compromised. How many of the judges were put on trial at the end of the day? Only two, one was acquitted because of the shoddy operation. The EFCC would have done a better job and achieve better results. It’s a matter of strategy, not gra-gra.

Why do you think armies use members of the opposing armies as informants instead of decimating them as enemies? It’s a matter of strategy.

Why do you think the prosecution sometimes use someone who committed an offence along with others, as prosecution star witness, instead of being charged along with the defendants? It’s a matter of strategy.

Why did prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as prosecutor of the alleged killers of Kudirat Abiola and the attempted assassination of of Alex Ibru, use Sgt.Rogers as the star prosecution witness when he was the one who pulled the trigger, it was a matter of strategy. And people didn’t make an issue that he was a killer and must also be charged.
Why is it that Musiliu Obanikoro who allegedly gave billions of Naira to Fayose towards the 2014 Ekiti election being used as a star prosecution witness instead of being charged with Fayose? It’s a matter of strategy.

When the Abdulsalami regime was planning the transition to civil rule in 1998/1999, General Abdulsalami said in an interview some years ago, that if the transition decree was to be applied to the letter, Alliance for Democracy (AD) would not have been registered because it didn’t meet all the criteria for registration. But for strategic reason for the transition to succeed, AD had to be registered in order to assuage the South West, otherwise, the transition was doomed, with its attendant consequences. That was wisdom and strategy.

So, when people say once you are found to be involved in corruption, you must face trial. They don’t understand. You need to be strategic in your actions. Two plus two is not always four when dealing with complex issues. Again, l reiterate, strategy, wisdom and circumspection are necessary, not just excitable actions that titillate the ears.

Richard Akinnola again, advocating that justice be tempered with mercy in the CJN’s case
