Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic extra-time final at the New York-New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The victory secured Spain’s second World Cup title, 16 years after lifting their maiden trophy in South Africa in 2010, and denied Argentina the chance to become the first nation in more than six decades to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup.
After a tense 90 minutes ended goalless, substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time with a powerful left-footed strike that beat Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and sparked wild celebrations among the Spanish players and fans.
Spain dominated much of the contest, creating the better chances and controlling possession, while Argentina struggled to impose themselves offensively.
The South Americans’ task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time of regulation for a second bookable offence, forcing Lionel Scaloni’s side to play the entirety of extra time with 10 men.
The final marked what is widely expected to be Lionel Messi’s last FIFA World Cup appearance. The Argentine captain, who guided his country to the 2022 title in Qatar, was unable to inspire another triumph as Spain’s disciplined defence kept him largely quiet throughout the contest.
Spain’s triumph also completed a remarkable achievement, making the country the first to simultaneously hold both the FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cup titles.
The victory capped an impressive tournament in which Luis de la Fuente’s side eliminated Portugal, Belgium and France before overcoming Argentina in the final.
