Super Eagles legend Augustine Eguavoen has reportedly returned as the Nigerian team’s acting coach, shortly after Jose Peseiro stepped down as manager.
On Friday, Peseiro announced his departure after 22 months in charge in a statement on X.
According to reports, Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, has asked Eguavoen to step in an interim capacity.
If confirmed, this will be his third stint at the helm of the Super Eagles.
Eguavoen had previously led the team on two separate occasions as the manager of the Nigeria national team.
In June 2005, Eguavoen was appointed as the caretaker coach of the Super Eagles.
Under his guidance, the Nigerian national team participated in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.
The team performed admirably, securing a bronze medal by defeating Senegal in the third-place play-off
Also, in June 2010, the NFF called upon Eguavoen once again. This time, he was asked to replace the Swedish coach Lars Lagerbäck on an interim basis.
Although he stepped in as a caretaker manager, Eguavoen made it clear that he had no intention of submitting an application for the role on a permanent basis.
