Sharon’s Diary: Final Episode (A letter to Mason)

Elsie Udoh

Darling Mason,

This is your mother. By the time you read this, you will be grown enough to learn from the sad mistakes your parents chose to make.

I conceived you under a rather unpleasant circumstance. I failed to control my childish emotions and became obsessed with the way people saw me so badly that I didn’t stop to think about what the outcome would be.

In my dire desire to feel among, I met your father, Bode. He was very handsome and appealing in all ramifications that I fell head over heels for him without him even trying!

I made it my mission to win him over so badly that I failed to notice that he was led too by strong emotion, only, it wasn’t the same as mine.

Sadly, I found out about his emotions the hard way — after he had forcefully deposited a part of him inside me which produced you.

Mason, you started as my biggest trauma but that changed to you being my one and only love.

When I heard your first cry, I was reminded all about how your father made me cry out loudly in pain and I wanted to end that memory.

But when I held you close and you grabbed my fingers so tightly with your tiny hands, my heart broke because of how inhumanly I thought and at that moment Mason, I swore to give you all the love life had to offer.

The affectionate love of a mother,
The silent yet undying love of a father,
And, the tender love of a best friend.

You are more than life to me Mason and I promise to love you and guide you till death separates me from you.

I’ve watched you grow into a fine young man with strong principles and I am super proud of you for not letting your birth circumstances determine who you are.

When I look at you Mason, I see a strong-willed man who is a respecter of women and a goal-getter. And every day, my heart is filled with gratitude and love for you.

Thank you for being an excellent son to your flawed mother.

Remember that the best gift you can offer anyone is kindness. As much as you can, seek peace with all men.

Also, walking away from a fight doesn’t mean you are weak but shows how strong you are to not lower yourself to the other person’s immaturity.

Continue to be true to yourself, thrive in your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses and never live your life to satisfy someone else.

Don’t give up no matter how bad the situation might be but know when to walk away if something is not meant to be.

And when you meet the lady your heart desires, search through her to be sure she will love you and care for you the way you deserve. If she checks all the boxes then endeavour to live up to being the right man for her.

Love her dearly and never lay your hands on her. If you ever get angry to that extent, just take a walk.

Be the man your father couldn’t be and get a lady worthier than I proved to be.

I love you, Mason.
Now and forever.

From Sharon your mother.
