Senate Calls For Investigation Into Arrest Of Innoson Boss

The upper chamber of the National Assembly, the Nigerian Senate has called for full investigation into the arrest and detention of Innoson owner, Dr Innocent Chukwuma by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Following a motion moved by Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the lawmakers agreed that the arrest of the Industrialist was not called for and not civil. Senator Ekweremade stated that the anti graft agency needed not to wade into the on going matter between Dr Innocent and his debtor/creditor, Guaranty Trust Bank plc.

Senator Ehinnaya Abaribe while seconding the motion noted that the lawmakers needed to know why the owner of the only indigenous car manufacturing plant was arrested and detained like a common criminal. He added that the Commission was acting outside it’s official duty just as it is being head by a Chairman that have not been confirmed by the Senate.

The Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki after listening to the prayers of the lawmakers directed the Committee for Financial Crimes to investigate into the matter that led to the arrest of Dr Innocent and also into his detention.

It will be recalled that Dr Innocent Chukwuma OFR was on Tuesday morning arrested by operatives of the EFCC in his Enugu residence and was whisked to Lagos State for questioning. He was later released late Wednesday night by the Lagos Office of the Commission. Though he earlier protested against his release as he asked for the reason he was arrested and detained, he however left the office hours later.
