Former Senate President and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki, has announced Engr. Kale Kawu as the party’s consensus candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Saraki disclosed this in a statement shared on his verified Facebook page on Friday, saying the decision followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders and governorship aspirants.
“I am pleased to announce that, after extensive consultations with stakeholders of the Kwara PDP and our leading gubernatorial aspirants, we have arrived at a consensus candidate to fly the flag of our great party in the forthcoming gubernatorial election,” Saraki wrote.
“That candidate is Engr. Kale Kawu.”
The announcement comes on the eve of the PDP governorship primary election, a development that could reshape the contest and reduce internal rivalry within the opposition party.
Saraki commended other aspirants who agreed to support the consensus arrangement, describing their decision as an act of sacrifice in the interest of the party and the state.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the other aspirants who, in the supreme interest of our party and state, have graciously stepped down to support this consensus,” he stated.
“It is this spirit of unity and selflessness that will carry us to victory.”
The former Senate President also urged party members, delegates and supporters to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct during the primary election.
The consensus announcement is expected to generate reactions within the Kwara political landscape as the PDP intensifies preparations to challenge the ruling party in the next governorship election.
