The house of representatives has rejected castration of persons convicted of rape.
At Thursday’s plenary session, the lawmakers voted against castration as punishment for rapists as suggested by James Faleke from Lagos state.
The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, asked what would happen to an older female who rapes a younger male.
The lawmakers, however, called for stiffer penalties against persons found guilty of rape. They also asked the federal government to launch a more effective campaign against rape and other forms of sexual violence against women.
The vote for castration as punishment as rape convicts is feuld by the ugly incident of rape and death of two Nigerian female students.
The first, a 22-year-old student of UNIBEN, Vera Uwaila Omosuwa, reportedly raped inside a church where she went to read at the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
The men were reported to have struck her in the head with a fire extinguisher after raping her.
She was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where she later died.
The second, an 18-year-old lady, identified as Barakat Bello, reportedly raped and murdered at her home of residence in Ibadan.
