Reps Call For Repair Of Failing Sections of East/West Road, Bayelsa Axis
The House of Representatives today called for the immediate repair of the failing East-West Road following a motion sponsored by Hon. (Prof.) Steve Azaiki, representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency, Bayelsa state.
The motion co-sponsored by Representatives from the South-South states of Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa-Ibom and Cross-River state, namely Hon. Frederick Yietiemone Agbedi, Hon. Preye Influence Oseke, Hon. Israel Sunny Goli, Hon. Fred Azibaupu Obua, highlighted that a greater portion of the road in these states have failed as the project contractor, SETRACO construction company have abandoned the project, thus making it a death trap and cause of nightmares to commuters who use the roads.
Following the motion, the House resolved that the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs should immediately direct the contractor Messers SETRACO to return to site and do the needful.
It also stated that the Niger Delta Affairs Ministry and SETRACO should prioritize the most threatened sections in Bayelsa state to avoid cut- offing the state.
While noting that the road which is an economic road to the region was constructed decades ago spanning four States from Delta State to Cross River State.
”This road is in the heart of the oil rich Niger Delta where the oil revenue is derived and hence very vital. This makes traffic very heavy on the road round all seasons, ” (Prof.) Steve Azaiki state on the floor of the green chamber while presenting the motion of urgent importance.
