The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has held talks with healthcare professionals and experts in the United States as part of efforts to improve Nigeria’s healthcare system ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi disclosed the meeting in a statement shared on his X account on Saturday, revealing that the engagement took place on Friday, June 5, 2026.

According to the former Anambra State governor, the discussions focused on understanding how effective health insurance systems can enhance healthcare delivery, particularly in primary and emergency care services.

He reiterated that expanding health insurance coverage remains a major priority in his healthcare agenda, alongside strengthening primary healthcare centres across Nigeria’s electoral wards, training more healthcare workers, and ensuring affordable, quality healthcare for citizens.

Obi said the engagement aligns with his commitment to building a stronger and more efficient healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of Nigerians.

“As part of our desire and commitment to building a healthier Nigeria, I met with some healthcare professionals and experts in the United States on Friday, June 5, 2026,” Obi stated.

“The meeting was essentially to deepen my understanding of how successful health insurance systems deliver improved healthcare, especially in the areas of primary and emergency care.

“One of our key health objectives remains unchanged: to expand health insurance coverage, strengthen primary healthcare across our electoral wards, train more healthcare workers, and make quality healthcare accessible and affordable for all Nigerians.”

The meeting comes as political stakeholders continue to outline policy priorities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with healthcare expected to remain a key issue in national discourse.
