NBA gets new president, Yakubu Maikyau

Yakubu Maikyau, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has been elected as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

In the just-concluded virtual election, Maikyau emerged victorious after polling 22,342 votes. His fellow SAN, Joe-Kyari Gadzama placed second with 10,842 votes, while the third spot was held by Taidi Jonathan who got 1,373 votes.

The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Professor Ayodele Akintunde, SAN declared Maikyau as the winner after announcing the final results of the election.

Maikyau, who is the 31st president of the legal body, is expected to take over from Olumide Akpata.

He was born on February 6, 1965 in Kebbi State. He bagged his bachelor of law (LLB) degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State in 1989. Upon completion of his programme at the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School, he was called to the Nigerian bar on December 12, 1990.

In 1991, Maikyau went into private law practice and joined the law firm of Messrs. Danladi Bamaiyi and Company in Sokoto. He cut his teeth as a lawyer at the firm and rose up through the ranks to become the head of chambers. He established his own law firm, Y. C. Maikyau & Co, in 2003.

Between 2013 and 2014, he attended the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, where he obtained a diploma in International Commercial Arbitration, and was subsequently admitted as a fellow of the Institute (FCIArb) in September 2014.

Maikyau was admitted as a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC) in November 2021.
