The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has taken decisive steps to address passport issuance challenges faced by Nigerians in the United States. Following a petition from Nigerians in the Diaspora, the minister has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to deploy new passport printers to consulates in Atlanta and New York.

The petition highlighted delays and difficulties in accessing consular services, prompting swift action. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, Tunji-Ojo confirmed receipt of the complaint and announced the immediate deployment of printers, emphasizing this as a short-term measure to resolve the issue.

Additionally, the minister revealed plans for a comprehensive reform of the passport system. Among the initiatives is the activation of a Passport Personalisation Centre in Abuja, expected to launch in the coming weeks. This facility will complement the ongoing introduction of a contactless application system already operational in Canada.

Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the government is committed to easing the passport application process while maintaining national security. “This is part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s promise to deliver innovation, convenience, and #renewedhope to Nigerians worldwide,” the statement noted.

These efforts reflect a broader strategy to streamline consular services and improve access for Nigerians in the Diaspora, offering a mix of immediate relief and long-term solutions.
