Millions of users around the world experienced disruptions on Sunday after Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook and Instagram suffered a widespread outage.
The incident prevented many users from accessing their Facebook accounts, while others reported being unable to refresh Instagram feeds or upload content.
According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, more than 4,000 reports were logged within a short period as users flagged problems with the two platforms.
Users attempting to access Facebook via the desktop version were greeted with an error message stating: “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”
Instagram users also reported that the app failed to load new posts and stories, with Downdetector recording a sharp increase in complaints as the disruption spread across multiple regions.
Facebook and Instagram, both operated by Meta Platforms Inc., are among the world’s most widely used social networking services, with billions of active users relying on them for communication, entertainment, business promotion and online commerce.
As of the time of filing this report, Meta had not released an official statement explaining the cause of the outage or indicating when full service would be restored.
