The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence five new full-time undergraduate programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approved programmes are B.Sc. Broadcasting, B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies, B.Sc. Public Relations, B.Sc. Cyber Security and B.Sc. Software Engineering.
The approval was conveyed in a letter signed by the NUC Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.
The approval followed a resource verification exercise conducted by a panel of experts from the NUC to assess LASUSTECH’s human and material resources for the proposed programmes.
Following the exercise, the Commission approved the five programmes for full-time study at the university’s main campus in Ikorodu.
The development means LASUSTECH is expanding its academic offering in both communication and technology-related disciplines. The three communication programmes will effectively create separate degree pathways from the university’s existing Mass Communication programme, while Cyber Security and Software Engineering will expand its technology-focused offerings.
LASUSTECH had earlier announced that the NUC resource verification panel visited the university to assess its readiness to unbundle Mass Communication into Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Studies, and Public Relations, as well as Computer Science into Software Engineering and Cyber Security.
At the time of the verification exercise, the university said it was running 41 programmes and that successful approval of the five proposed programmes would increase the number to 46.
The latest approval comes against the backdrop of the university’s ongoing accreditation exercise.
In April 2026, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olumuyiwa Omotola Odusanya disclosed that LASUSTECH had 25 fully accredited programmes, while 15 others were pending accreditation. He said the university had grown from 31 programmes at inception to 41 programmes.
The university also recorded 13 full accreditations out of 14 programmes presented during the 2025 NUC accreditation exercise. One programme, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, received interim accreditation.
The university said that, since its emergence, 39 programmes had been presented for accreditation and none had failed the process.
Beyond the NUC accreditation exercise, LASUSTECH also secured full professional accreditation for its Architecture programme from the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria.
The university began operations in 2022 following the transformation of the former Lagos State Polytechnic into a university. It currently operates five colleges covering Agriculture, Applied Social Sciences, Basic Sciences, Engineering and Technology, and Environmental Design and Technology.
The addition of Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Studies, Public Relations, Cyber Security and Software Engineering will further broaden LASUSTECH’s academic structure as it prepares for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The new programmes are expected to provide additional admission options for prospective students seeking degrees in media, communication, cybersecurity and software development.
