All is set for the celebration of 2017 June 12th memorial day by the Lagos State Government.
A close source revealed to BlackBox Nigeria that the Akinwunmi Ambode led administration is set to have a remarkable June 12th celebration.
The event is set to hold at the massive Lagos Television Blue Roof multipurpose Hall, Agindingbi, Ikeja.
It was gathered that the celebration may also be added as one of the events to mark the Golden Jubilee of creation of the State, which happened to play host to most of the activities in the nation’s history.
June 12th is not just a date on the calendar like every other days, it is the Day recognised by progressive politicians as Democracy Day, against the May 29th currently approved.
June 12th, 1993 was the day the first Presidential election since the 1983 Military coup and was widely won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO). He was however denied the victory as the election was declared inconclusive.
The Day is being celebrated in honour of the Presidential election which has since been regarded as the Most and only Free and Fair election in the history of Democracy in Nigeria. The fact that the results were not openly declared by the then Military Head of State gave it more worldwide attention.
The development that followed the decision of the General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida led administration soon caused unrest and caused the Abacha coup which took over power that same year.
Many political activists have since been calling on the Federal Government to change the country’s Democracy Day from May 29th to June 12th.
While other States in the country usually don’t honour the date, Ogun and Lagos States are known to always either declare the Day public holiday and also staging events to commemorate in memory of the Winner, Late MKO Abiola, even though he was never approved.
