Amid economic Hardship and increasing inflation, the Lagos State Government has announced a hike in boarding fees for all public schools in the state.
In a directive issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, through the director of basic Education, Olufemi Asaolu, all Public Boarding House schools in Lagos State have been informed of the approved fee revision.
Effective immediately, the boarding fee has been adjusted to One Hundred Thousand Naira (₦100,000) per student.
“I have the directive of the Honourable Commissioner to inform all Public Boarding House schools in Lagos State that the State Government has approved the review of the Boarding fee payable in all Public Boarding House schools in Lagos State. The newly approved fee is One Hundred Thousand Naira (100,000) Only.” the statement reads
The initial fee was set at ₦25,000 and later increased to ₦50,000 before reaching its current amount. In addition to this fee adjustment, students are also required to provide basic groceries for their stay.
However, the Public schools in Nigeria are meant to be government-funded institutions that provide essential education opportunities to children across the country, often with minimal or no tuition fees.
The increase in boarding fees underscores the challenges faced by educational institutions in maintaining standards amidst economic pressures, affecting both students and families across Lagos State.
