OPay Digital Services Limited has threatened legal action against an X user over a post alleging that the fintech company would be going on an indefinite break.
The company, in a letter dated August 31, 2026, accused the X user, Cute Hafserh (@haifah_er_abba), of publishing what it described as false, malicious and defamatory information capable of damaging its reputation and business operations.
According to the letter signed by OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, the company was notified on August 30 of the publication in which Hafserh allegedly claimed that OPay would be “going on long indefinite break” and advised customers to withdraw their funds.
OPay rejected the claim, describing it as false and lacking any factual, legal or ethical basis.
The company demanded that Hafserh permanently delete the post and desist from further disseminating the claim on X or any other platform.
It also demanded a clear and unequivocal retraction of the publication, alongside an unreserved apology to the company, by 11:59 p.m. on August 31.
OPay warned that failure to comply would trigger legal action.
“Your action has caused irreparable damage to us and we shall take all appropriate legal action against you and shall pursue all remedies available to us,” the company stated.
The threat of legal action comes after OPay publicly dismissed the viral claim that it was preparing to shut down or suspend operations, urging its customers to disregard the misinformation and rely on its official communication channels for updates.
