The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been eliminated from the Paris 2024 Olympics after a 3-1 defeat to Japan on Wednesday, July 31.

Japan took an early lead with goals from Maika Hamano and Mina Tanaka. Jennifer Echegini managed to score one for Nigeria, but their efforts fell short as Hikaru Kitagawa sealed Japan’s victory.

Meanwhile, Nadeshiko Japan secured second place in Group B, finishing just two points behind the World Champions, Spain, who defeated Brazil 2-0 after Marta received a red card in the first half of the match.

However, this marks the Super Falcons’ first appearance at the Games in 16 years, their fourth Olympics after qualifying for the competition in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2024.

The team’s performance has sparked public reactions, with one a X user, stating, “In my honest view, I feel like we have relied on experienced players for too long. Football today is about speed and coordination. We need fresh blood with speed on their feet.”

Another user added, “Let them regroup and focus on their attack; hopefully, something positive will come from it. Now, our problem is clear, and we need to find a solution. They are a good team, just needing a few adjustments. Up SUPER FALCONS! They did their best, but it wasn’t enough to achieve the desired results.”
