News have recently gone viral about the separation of businessman, Modupe Alakija from his wife, Nigeria’s richest woman, Folorunsho Alakija.
While details remain sketchy as to the cause of the breakup of the 30-year-old union which produced four boys, insiders claim the marriage ended a while back but the couple kept it out of the public for social reasons.

Folorunsho Alakija who is an evangelist is reported to have felt embarrassed about the situation and wouldn’t want it out to avoid negative comments but it was alleged that they have been living apart for quite a while.

An insider further disclosed to BlackBox Nigeria that Mr. Alakija moved out of the couple’s Ikoyi mansion over a year ago and have been inhabiting in another palatable house also in the highbrow Ikoyi.
Another insider reveals that while Folorunsho Alakija has reduced her involvement at work leaving most of the duties to her son, Rotimi who is the Executive Director, she has been concentrating most of her time to her ministry by going on missional assignments across the country while also focusing on her philanthropic activities. Mrs Alakija is the founder and leading minister at Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International.

Asides being the Chairman of the family company, Famfa Oil and being a scion of the prestigious Adeyemo Alakija family, not much is known about Mr Alakija who turned 80 in February.
A couple of years ago, he was however involved in a scandal that got him into the media albeit negatively.
According to reports, Mr Modupe Alakija was suspended by the highly esteemed Ikoyi Club for assaulting a member. Alakija who himself is a member of the club is said to have attacked an Indian, Ashish Gajarr. The club suspended the businessman for one year starting from December 1st, 2021 to November 10th, 2022.

Explaining his side of the story however, Modupe Alakija had explained that the said Indian actually recorded a video of him without permission which warranted him to hold on to hold his shirt while demanding he deletes it before it goes out of proportion.
BlackBox Nigeria gathered that Ikoyi Club 1938 was on the said occasion holding a masked party which required everyone to put on a mask on the premises. Mr Alakija had stepped in wearing his mask but was soon engrossed in a conversation with another member at the entrance of the venue which made him remove his mask for a while.
The complainant, Mr Ashish Gajarr swiftly appeared and instructed Alakija to put on his mask but he responded by telling him to “f*ck off”. The Indian then brought out his phone and recorded him.
According to Mr Alakija in his defence, he held on to the Indian’s shirt to stop him from running away with his picture which might get into wrong hands and therefore endanger him or his family.

“I did that because his photograph might end up in the hands of kidnappers or assassins, which will forfeit the reason the Inspector-General of Police gave him an escort to prevent kidnap,” Mr Alakija said in a statement.
He however further revealed that he had taken legal action against Mr Gajar for violating his privacy.

Not much was heard of the issue subsequently but BlackBox Nigeria gathered that the 85 years Ikoyi club eventually settled it in house to avoid negative attention to it.

Mr Alakija had after the incident has kept a low profile from the social scene until news of his marriage collapse hit the news over the weekend. Even his 80th birthday in February was done in a modest manner devoid of festivities one would have expected from a personality with his social status.
