How Eric Chelle Used Russia Clash to Test Super Eagles’ Next Generation

Nigeria’s 3-3 draw with Russia may have ended without a winner, but for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, the bigger insights from Tuesday’s friendly in Nizhny Novgorod was the emergence of new options for the national team.

With unavailability of players like Osimhen, Chelle handed international debuts to nine players as Nigeria fielded a heavily rotated side against a Russian team that had recently thrashed Namibia 6-0.

Only six players in Nigeria’s starting XI had previously represented the Super Eagles, according to the Nigeria Football Federation, making the encounter one of Chelle’s biggest tests of the team’s depth since taking charge.

However, the experiment produced mixed results.

Nigeria took an early lead through returning forward Kelechi Iheanacho, who marked his comeback with a powerful 11th-minute strike.

But Russia exposed Nigeria’s inexperienced defence three times, with Lechi Sadulaev, Matvey Kislyak and Aleksey Miranchuk putting the hosts 3-1 ahead early in the second half.

Rather than relying solely on established names to rescue the game, Chelle turned to his younger players, making the move paid off.

Nineteen-year-old Peter Edokpolor, making his senior international debut, cut through the Russian defence before firing Nigeria’s second goal in the 78th minute.

Akor Adams then completed the comeback in the fourth minute of stoppage time, converting after a quick counter-attack to secure a 3-3 draw.

The performance therefore offered Chelle both encouragement and warning.

The youthful side showed the ability to respond under pressure, but the three goals conceded also exposed the defensive problems that have continued to trouble Nigeria.

The Super Eagles had entered the friendly after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

For Edokpolor, the night was particularly significant. The teenager went from making his first appearance for Nigeria to scoring against Russia in the space of 78 minutes.

The draw also extended Nigeria’s unbeaten record against Russia after the two countries played out a 1-1 draw in their first meeting in June 2025.
