A Nigerian engineer, Oluwafemi Samuel Oyelowo, has shared an inspiring journey from humble beginnings in Mushin, Lagos, to becoming an Operations Engineer at global energy technology company Siemens Energy.
His story was recently recounted by a Nigerian professional, Toyib Adewale Adelodun who met him during the #Atomicon26 conference in Newcastle, United Kingdom.
According to the account, Oyelowo attended a secondary school that did not have a Further Mathematics teacher, a challenge that threatened his dream of pursuing a career in engineering.
Determined to succeed, he reportedly offered to wash the car of an older acquaintance in his neighborhood in exchange for money, which he used to purchase a Further Mathematics textbook.
The textbook became a crucial learning resource, enabling him to study independently and continue pursuing his academic ambitions.
Oyelowo later earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lagos State University (LASU) before proceeding to the United Kingdom for a Master’s degree.
Today, he works as an Operations Engineer at Siemens Energy and is aiming to become a Chartered Engineer in the coming years.
The story has drawn attention as an example of resilience and the impact of seeking opportunities despite difficult circumstances.
The account also referenced similar stories of successful individuals who benefited from taking initiative. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs famously contacted Hewlett-Packard co-founder Bill Hewlett as a teenager to request spare parts for a school project and was subsequently offered a summer job. Similarly, entrepreneur Elon Musk reportedly secured an internship after directly contacting a senior banking executive in Canada.
The story underscores a broader lesson about persistence, resourcefulness, and the willingness to ask for opportunities, qualities that can help shape successful careers despite challenging beginnings.
