Former Delta State Commissioner and ex-House of Representatives member Joan Onyemaechi was abducted on Tuesday evening during a violent incident at her church in Asaba, where two police orderlies and her driver were tragically killed.

Reports indicate that armed assailants raided King Jesus and I Church on Ogajifo Street off DSB Road, opening fire on the security detail and the driver accompanying Onyemaechi.

Amidst the chaos, the gunmen abducted the former lawmaker and her children

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing events, describing how the gunmen stormed the church premises and started firing shots, injuring two police orderlies and the driver. Tragically, a stray bullet also claimed the life of a passer-by who was passing at that moment.

Onyemaechi, who previously served as Commissioner for Technical Education under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, recently made headlines when she stepped down from her position to support her younger brother’s bid for chairmanship in the local council elections.

Confirming the abduction, SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, acknowledged the gravity of the incident, stating, “One police officer and one civilian were killed during the abduction. We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.”
