Five ways to handle grief

Onwaeze Tricia

Defined as the natural response/reaction to a loss, grief is no stranger to all of us. What throws us in this loop of emotions could be the death of a loved one, job loss, family problems, or anything really.

Grief is a long bumpy ride, and it requires patience and intentionality to get to the destination which happens to be healing.

Here are five ways to deal with grief.

1. Accept your emotions as they come.

As earlier stated, grief is a long bumpy ride. It is a roller coaster of emotions. Let your emotions out as you feel them. You feel the urge to laugh? Go ahead, laugh. You feel the need to cry? Do just that. Let your emotions out always.

2. Be intentional about your healing

Healing comes different for people and as a result, there’s no estimated time to heal. We all feel pain differently and we also find solace and peace differently too. Figure out what soothes your pain and makes you feel better and work with it. Make sure it’s a positive act.

3. Surround yourself with positivity

You need only positive energy around you. Ranging from your family to your friends, to the places you go to, to the things you read or listen to. Everything has to feed life and positivity into you. Be very mindful of what your mind consumes because truthfully you are quite vulnerable in that period.

4. Communicate with God

The general term for this would be PRAYER. But in this context, I’m using the phrase “communicate with God” differently. You will most likely have tons of questions troubling you and might want to scream or just rant. Speak to God in any way you can at that point.

5. Cling to faith

Faith is the only reassurance you have that God hasn’t abandoned you. Faith reminds you of the promises of the Lord. John 16:33 says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulations. But take heart, I have overcome the world”. Let your faith guide you through your healing journey.
