The Federal Government has prohibited the operation of commercial motorcycles and tricycles on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, citing the need to protect the newly constructed road from abuse and ensure its durability.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, announced the directive on Sunday, saying the restriction will come into effect this week.

According to him, the decision forms part of broader measures to preserve the integrity of the multi-billion-naira coastal highway and guarantee its long-term sustainability.

Dare also warned against the indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles on the coastal highway and other bridges across Lagos State, stressing that such practices would no longer be tolerated.

The Ministry of Works further banned the dumping of refuse along highway corridors, describing it as a harmful practice that undermines public infrastructure and environmental safety.

He disclosed that warning signs have already been installed along the highway, while enforcement teams and task force officials will be deployed to strategic locations to ensure compliance with the new regulations.

The Federal Controller described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a world-class infrastructure project that requires adequate protection and proper maintenance to deliver its intended benefits to Nigerians.

He urged motorists and other road users to obey the directives, noting that preserving the road would extend its lifespan and ensure that the country derives maximum value from the massive investment in the project.

Authorities have warned that violators of the new measures will face strict sanctions as the government intensifies efforts to maintain order and safeguard the landmark highway project.
