Father of Olga Carmona, who secured Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup on Sunday with her goal, is dead.
Carmona received the sad news of her father’s passing after the match.
After the final whistle, not knowing what had happened, she was among the Spanish players celebrating and dancing on the field, and appeared to participate normally during the trophy presentation.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation, RFEF, therefore revealed her father’s death, sending their condolences in a statement posted on social media.
It stated, “the RFEF deeply regrets to inform of the passing of Olga Carmona’s father. The footballer learned about this tragic news after the World Cup final concluded.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Olga and her family during this profoundly sorrowful time. Olga, you hold a special place in Spanish football history.”
Carmona’s remarkable goal against England had etched her name in Spanish football history just before she received the devastating news.
Despite the Lionesses’ efforts to equalize, Spain held their ground, and goalkeeper Mary Earps played a pivotal role in preventing Spain from extending their lead with a second-half penalty save.
In a poignant post-goal celebration, Carmona displayed a shirt bearing the word “Merchi,” paying tribute to her best friend’s late mother who had recently passed away.
Carmona revealed the significance of the celebration to Spanish broadcasters, stating, “I would like to dedicate this victory, this achievement, to the mother of one of my closest friends who recently left us.
“I celebrated the goal with her shirt, and I send my love and dedication to the entire family.”
However, at that moment, the Real Madrid star was unaware of her father’s passing.
