A Lagos High Court on Monday revealed to the general public that the consumption of certain products of the Coca Cola Bottling Company like Fanta and Sprite are dangerous for human consumption when drank with Vitamin C.
The court revealed that the products have been endagering the lives of Nigerians for over decades after it examined a case brought before it by one Dr Fijabi.
It was disclosed in the honourable Court of Justice Adedayo Oyebanji, that the accused had purchased the two products to the tune of N12m and exported it to London, United Kingdom, where it was rejected and destroyed on arrival.
According to Dr Fijabi, the two products were declared unfit for human consumption after the Health Safety and Regulations in UK discovered that they contained poisonous levels of Benzonic Acid and Sunset addictives.
For forfeiting his whole exports to UK, Fijabi returned to Nigeria to sue the Coca Cola Bottling Company for negligence, breach of duty of care to its consumers and off course, loss of earnings.
It was however shocking to all present in the Court when the CBC through its legal representative claimed Dr Fijabi never disclosed he wanted to export the purchased products, as the production was for ‘local consumotion’.
Visibly concerned while reading out her judgement, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji of the Lagos High Court declared that the Coca Cola Bottling Company was callous and negligent.
She also lashed out at the National Agency for Foods, Drugs, Administration and Control, NAFDAC for not carrying out their duties properly.
She thus declared it mandatory to the Company to henceforth add a special warning to its Fanta and Sprite products, to alert the general public on its consumption.
It was discovered that the mixture of either of the drink with Victamin C tablets is very dangerous for human consumption.
Justice Oyebanji therefore mandated CBC to inscribe “THIS PRODUCT MUST NOT BE TAKEN WITH VITAMIN C”, a notice similar to the ‘SMOKERS ARE LIABLE TO DIE YOUNG” written on cigarrettes sold in the country.
