Fall of Zazoo: Court Slams Portable with Three Months Jail Sentence for Assaulting Police Officer

Controversial Nigerian street-hop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable has been sentenced to three months in prison with an option of a N30,000 fine.

The judgment, delivered by Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo, found Portable guilty on two counts relating to assault and obstruction of law enforcement officers.

The singer, known for his erratic public behavior and viral outbursts, was arrested in March 2023 following an incident in which he physically assaulted a police officer and obstructed officers attempting to serve him an arrest warrant.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Awoleke, told the court that the incident occurred on November 18, 2022, at around 11:00 a.m. in Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District.

According to the charge sheet, Portable and others now at large conspired to commit felony assault and unlawfully beat a police officer, Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi, during the course of duty.

The charges brought against the artist also included theft of musical equipment, such as a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a Studio 2 interface connection cable, and an AKG P420 condenser microphone, offenses allegedly committed at various times in 2022.

These charges were brought under sections 383, 384, 390, 351, and 517 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006.

Delivering the judgment, Magistrate Ilo sentenced Portable to one month’s imprisonment or a N10,000 fine for Count 1 (assault) and two months’ imprisonment or a N20,000 fine for Count 2 (resisting arrest). The sentences are to run concurrently.

Portable, who has just been released from Oke-kura prison following defamatory statement made against Fuji icon, King Saheed Osupa, has added another jail term to his record.
