Efunroye: The Unicorn, the latest film produced by Nollywood actress and filmmaker Faithia Williams, has emerged as the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of the weekend, earning N102 million at the box office.

The milestone comes days after Williams publicly alleged that attempts were being made to frustrate the film’s performance in cinemas through poor scheduling and the discouragement of moviegoers.

Announcing the achievement on Tuesday, film distributor FilmOne thanked Nigerians for supporting the historical drama, revealing that the movie generated N102 million in ticket sales over the weekend.

Reacting to the development, Williams expressed gratitude to fans and supporters on her social media platforms, attributing the film’s success to their continued patronage and encouragement.

The box office feat follows the actress’ concerns last Friday over what she described as unfavourable treatment of the film in some cinemas despite extensive promotional campaigns ahead of its release.

Efunroye: The Unicorn is a biographical drama inspired by the life of renowned 19th-century merchant and kingmaker, Madam Efunroye Tinubu. The film explores themes of power, cultural identity, leadership and resistance to colonial influence through an artistic retelling of her life story.

The movie premiered nationwide on May 1, 2026, and marks Williams’ cinematic debut as a producer.

Directed by Abbey Lanre, Adebayo Tijani and Tope Adebayo Salami, the film boasts a star-studded cast including Faithia Williams, Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Chatta, Femi Adebayo, Mercy Aigbe, Femi Branch, Kolawole Ajeyemi and Layi Wasabi.

Industry observers say the strong box office performance underscores growing audience interest in indigenous historical narratives and biographical films.
