DEMOCRACY DAY 2026: CELEBRATING 27 YEARS OF DEMOCRATIC JOURNEY, RESILIENCE, AND NATIONAL RENEWAL

Happy Democracy Day to all Nigerians!

Today, we proudly commemorate 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria, a remarkable milestone in our nation’s history and a testament to the enduring spirit of our people. This occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on our collective journey, celebrate our achievements, learn from our challenges, and renew our commitment to building a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Nigeria.

The story of Nigeria’s democracy is a story of sustainability, resilience, tenacity, purposefulness, and magnanimity. Through periods of economic turbulence, political transitions, security challenges, and social transformations, Nigerians have consistently demonstrated an unwavering belief in the democratic process. Our resilience has kept the nation moving forward, our tenacity has sustained hope in difficult times, our purposefulness has continued to inspire progress, and our magnanimity has enabled us to accommodate diversity while preserving national unity.

As we celebrate this important milestone, it is fitting to acknowledge the bold leadership and far-reaching reforms being championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. History has shown that transformative leadership often requires difficult but necessary decisions. The ongoing economic reforms are aimed at correcting long-standing structural distortions, strengthening public finances, encouraging productive investments, improving infrastructure, promoting local production, and creating a more sustainable economic foundation for future generations.

While the short-term adjustments may be challenging, there are growing indications that the reforms are positioning Nigeria for greater economic stability, increased investor confidence, enhanced competitiveness, and long-term prosperity. Nations do not become prosperous through consumption alone; they prosper through production, innovation, discipline, and strategic planning. The courage to implement reforms today is an investment in a stronger tomorrow.

As we reflect on the future of our nation, we must also confront one of the most important lessons from our history: the inseparable relationship between education, economic development, and national security.

Many decades ago, the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, warned that neglecting mass education would eventually create social and economic consequences capable of undermining national development. His observations remain relevant today.

How the Chicken Has Come Home to Roost

Fast forward to 2026, several national indicators continue to underscore the importance of the issues Awolowo raised many years ago.

First, the challenge of educational deficits. Large numbers of children remain outside the formal education system, while literacy levels in some parts of the country continue to lag behind national expectations. The consequences of educational exclusion extend beyond individual poverty; they affect productivity, civic participation, innovation, and national cohesion. A population deprived of quality education becomes vulnerable to misinformation, manipulation, and social dislocation.

Second, the challenge of economic underdevelopment and inadequate planning. For decades, the Nigerian economy has struggled with overdependence on oil revenues, insufficient industrialization, weak value-chain development, and inadequate job creation. Agriculture, manufacturing, and other productive sectors have not always received the level of strategic attention required to absorb the growing labour force. The result has been rising unemployment, underemployment, and economic frustration among millions of young Nigerians.

Third, the challenge of insecurity. Across different parts of the country, insecurity has manifested in various forms, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, violent crime, and communal conflicts. While security challenges are often complex and multi-dimensional, poverty, lack of education, unemployment, and social exclusion frequently create conditions that criminal elements exploit for recruitment and mobilization.

The lesson is clear: sustainable security cannot be achieved through military action alone. Lasting peace must be built upon a foundation of quality education, economic opportunity, social inclusion, and purposeful governance.
This is why Nigeria must embrace compulsory mass western education alongside vocational, technical, digital, and entrepreneurial education as a strategic national priority. Every child, regardless of location, religion, ethnicity, or social status, must have access to quality education that equips them with the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to society.

Similarly, Nigeria requires a deliberate and coordinated economic development strategy that prioritizes:
• Agricultural modernization and value addition;
• Industrialization and manufacturing growth;
• Technology and innovation;
• Infrastructure development;
• Youth entrepreneurship;
• Skills acquisition and employment generation; and
• Private sector-led economic expansion.

When young people are educated, skilled, employed, and hopeful about their future, the appeal of criminality and violent extremism diminishes significantly. The most effective long-term security strategy is therefore not merely the deployment of force, but the deliberate creation of opportunities.

As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that democracy flourishes when citizens are empowered, institutions are strengthened, and opportunities are widely shared. Let us continue to support policies and initiatives that advance education, economic productivity, national unity, and social justice.

Nigeria possesses extraordinary human and natural resources. With visionary leadership, strategic planning, and collective commitment, our nation can achieve unprecedented levels of development and prosperity.

May this Democracy Day inspire renewed hope in our national destiny.

May our democracy continue to deepen.

May our economy continue to grow.

May peace and security prevail across every community.

May the Almighty God bless our leaders with wisdom, courage, and integrity.

May He bless every hardworking Nigerian with opportunities, success, and prosperity.

And may He continue to bless and preserve the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Happy Democracy Day!
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Long Live Our Democracy.
Long Live the Nigerian People.
