A Federal High Court in Uyo has found a senator currently representing the Akwa Ibom North East District, Bassey Albert Akpan, and the Young Progressives Party’s (YPP) governorship candidate guilty of corruption, as it sentenced him to 42-year imprisonment.

The court on Thursday, December 1, 2022, gave its verdict on Mr. Albert, after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, brought charges against him.

To fulfill his prison sentence, he has been transported to the Ikot Ekpene prisons in Akwa Ibom State.

While working as the Commissioner for Finance in Akwa Ibom State from 2010 to 2014, Albert, was accused of accepting bribes in the form of 12 automobiles valued at N254 million from oil trader Olajide Omokore.

Prior to his months ago defection to the YPP, where he obtained the party’s nomination for the 2023 governorship race, the guilty Senator was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the state’s ruling party.
