Ted Turner, the trailblazing media mogul who founded CNN and revolutionised global television news, has died at the age of 87.
Turner’s death was confirmed on Wednesday by Turner Enterprises, bringing to a close the life of a man widely credited with transforming how the world consumes news.
The American entrepreneur launched CNN in 1980, creating the world’s first 24-hour news network, an idea that reshaped journalism by delivering continuous, real-time coverage of global events.
Known for his bold personality and risk-taking approach, Turner built a vast media empire that extended beyond news, including major television networks and film assets.
His company later merged with Time Warner in a landmark deal that further expanded his influence in global media.
Beyond broadcasting, Turner was also recognised for his philanthropy and environmental advocacy, including a historic $1 billion donation to support United Nations initiatives and global development efforts.
Tributes have poured in from political leaders, journalists and industry figures, many describing him as a visionary who changed the face of modern media.
Turner’s legacy remains deeply embedded in global journalism, with CNN continuing to operate as one of the world’s most influential news organisations built on the foundation he created more than four decades ago.
