China has formally approved its law to allow couples to have three children in order to boost the country’s birth rate.

The policy was passed into law at a meeting of China’s top lawmakers, the National People’s Congress (NPC), on Friday.

Earlier announced in May, the three-child policy which would allow couples to have up to three children, was passed into law along with some other resolutions aimed at boosting the birth rate and reducing the burden of raising a child.

They include: increasing women’s employment rights, cancelling maintenance fee (a financial penalty paid by couples who have children beyond the limit), encouraging local governments to offer parental leave, and improving childcare infrastructure.
