Chadian Military names son of late President Idriss Deby as country’s new leader

Following the death of President Idriss Debby Itno, the Chadian Army has announced his 37-year-old son, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, a four-star General, as the new leader of the country.

The late Chadian leader reportedly died as a result of injuries he sustained on the battlefield after he led his troops’ offensive against terrorists.

The death of 68 year-old Deby was announced earlier today by the Army on state television.

The announcement of Deby’s death came just hours after electoral officials had declared him the winner of the April 11 Presidential election, paving the way for him to stay in power for six more years.

In a statement on state television, Army’s Spokesman, General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said Deby breathed his last defending the nation on the battlefield, over the weekend.

Deby’s campaign had said yesterday that he was headed to the frontlines to join troops battling “terrorists”.

The late Deby was in office for three decades, having come to power in a rebellion in 1990. He was one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
