The chickens have, probably, come home to roost as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested famous socialite and billionaire businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu, fondly called Obi Cubana for money laundering and tax fraud allegations.
According to the Punch, Iyiegbu arrived at the headquarters of the EFCC at Jabi, Abuja, at about noon on Monday and is currently being quizzed by operatives of the commission.
Although, the allegations made against the popular socialite were sketchy at the time of this report.
The only information gathered, according to the Punch, via a source, was that Iyiegbu’s case is centred around alleged money laundering and tax fraud.
“Obi Cubana was arrested and brought to the EFCC headquarters on Monday afternoon over allegations of money laundering and tax fraud. He is being grilled by detectives as we speak,” the source revealed.
However, EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said that he has not been briefed on the development.
Recall, that Obi Cubana caused a frenzy, in July, when he hosted an ostentatious burial for his late mother in Oba, Anambra State, as over 200 cows were reportedly killed.
Obi Cubana’s lavish display of wealth received different reactions from many Nigerians who questioned his source of wealth.
Also, recall that in the same month, popular activist, Deji Adeyanju advised Obi Cubana to be careful when it comes to public display of wealth.
Now following Cubana’s alleged arrest, Deji took to his Facebook page to post a message on the issue.
The post reads, “When I told Obi Cubana to be careful, some people said was jealous of him. It’s still much better to be arrested by EFCC than FBI.”
“He should be celebrating that it’s EFCC. Calm down, Obi. It’s not serious for now but it could get worse,” he added.
