Former Portugal captain Luis Figo has publicly joined call for the resignation of Gianni Infantino, accusing the FIFA president of damaging the integrity of world football.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday via X, Figo said he was joining others across the football community in demanding that Infantino step down from office.
According to the Ballon d’Or winner, Infantino has failed to uphold the standards expected of the FIFA presidency, alleging that he had “debased the office” he once promised to restore.
Figo further accused the FIFA chief of dishonesty and self-interest, claiming Infantino had “lied, deceived and tried to feather his own nest at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve.”
The former Real Madrid and Barcelona star also alleged that Infantino had lost the confidence of senior FIFA officials, close advisers and many people dedicated to the sport.
“It is too late to save his dignity, but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now,” Figo said.
The statement adds to growing criticism surrounding Infantino’s leadership, although FIFA has yet to respond publicly to Figo’s latest remarks.
