Former Nigeria’s Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has again clinched the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Atiku emerged the PDP presidential flagbearer at the opposition party’s special national convention which took place at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on Saturday.
The former Vice President floored other leading aspirants in race including former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike; his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Emmanuel Udom, among others.
He scored 371 votes, followed by Wike who polled 237 votes, as Saraki pulled 70 votes to place third.
Shortly before the commencement of the election, the governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal withdrew from the race, and asked his supporters to support the candidacy of Atiku.
Interestingly, this will be the 75-year-old politician’s sixth attempt for the nation’s top job. In the 2019 elections, he was the PDP presidential candidate. He, however, lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.
