Nigerian Bar Association has elected a new president. He is Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, a Senior Advocate if Nigeria (SAN). Below are ten quick facts to know about him…
He was a former Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice of Kano State.
He co-founded Dikko & Mahmoud, a law firm in 1993 with Mr A B Dikko.
He is the second Vice President of National Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, a position he has been holding since September, 2014.
He got elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2011 and he is also a Life Bencher of the Body of Benchers (highest regulatory body for the legal profession in Nigeria).
He was a Member of the Presidential Committee of Incentives, Waivers and Concessions (for investments and Businesses) in Nigeria.
He chaired the National Committee on the review of the Nigeria’s Code of Corporate Governance for Public Companies.
He also served on advisory basis on the World Bank Country Advisory Group for Nigeria and National Advisory Council of the Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP), a British Council run programme supported by the Department For International Development, DFID.
He attended Ahmadu Bello University, graduated with B.Sc in 1979. He also obtained a Master’s degree from same institution. He obtained a certificate in Techniques of Privatization from G=Harvard Institute of International Development in 2000. He was also at the Northwestern University School of Law, where he attended the Summer Institute in Corporate Law and Business in 2001.
He was admitted as a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK after obtaining a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration of the Institute at Keble College Oxford UK in 2008.
AB Mahmoud emerged as the new NBA President after garnering 3055 votes against his opponent, JK Gadzama who polled 2,384 votes.
