Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, has died at the age of 94.
Tukur, a prominent politician and businessman from Adamawa State, held several important positions during his long public career. Here are five things to know about him.
1. He was governor of old Gongola State
Tukur was elected governor of Gongola State in 1983. The state was later divided into Adamawa and Taraba states. His tenure was cut short following the military coup of December 1983.
2. He served as Minister of Industries
He was appointed Minister of Industries during the military administration of General Sani Abacha in the 1990s.
3. He headed the Nigerian Ports Authority
Before becoming governor, Tukur served as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982.
4. He became PDP National Chairman
Tukur was elected National Chairman of the PDP in March 2012. He resigned from the position in January 2014 following a period of internal crisis within the party.
5. He was also a businessman
Beyond politics, Tukur had a long career in business and African economic affairs. He served in leadership positions including President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group.
