For years, William Troost-Ekong was known to Nigerians mainly through football, the defender who rose to become Super Eagles captain, led Nigeria to an Africa Cup of Nations final and became one of the country’s most recognisable players.
But on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, attention shifted from his football career to a deeply personal moment in Doha, Qatar.
Troost-Ekong, 33, recited the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith, and announced his entry into Islam while in the Qatari capital.
A video of the moment circulated online, while Qatari newspaper Al-Arab reported the development.
Yet one question remains largely unanswered: what took the former Super Eagles captain to that moment?
Troost-Ekong’s conversion comes after a period in which his football career took him deeper into the Middle East.
After spells across Europe, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Greece and England, the defender moved to Saudi Arabia in 2024 when he joined Al-Khaleej.
He later moved to Qatar, joining Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli in January 2026.
His move to Qatar placed him in a country where Islam is deeply embedded in public life, culture and daily routines.
However, there is currently no credible public evidence establishing that his relocation to the Gulf was the reason for his conversion.
Reports about the Shahadah have not stated when Troost-Ekong began considering Islam, who influenced his decision or whether his experiences in Saudi Arabia or Qatar played a role.
What is known is that Troost-Ekong publicly recited the Shahadah in Doha.
Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah also shared footage of the moment online, while reports identified a Muslim cleric as being involved in guiding the defender through the testimonies of faith.
Troost-Ekong was also reported to have expressed a desire to read more and learn about Islam.
Beyond that, the story becomes less certain.
Troost-Ekong has not, according to the reports available on Wednesday, publicly explained what specifically led him to embrace Islam.
So claims that he converted because of a particular person, relationship, experience or influence remain unconfirmed.
Born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father and Dutch mother, Troost-Ekong chose to represent Nigeria internationally and made his Super Eagles debut in 2015.
He went on to win 83 caps and score eight goals for Nigeria, representing the country at the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations and Olympic Games.
His defining international tournament came at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
As captain, Troost-Ekong helped Nigeria reach the final and scored three goals during the competition. Despite Nigeria’s defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the final, he was named Player of the Tournament.
He announced his retirement from international football in 2025 after a decade with the Super Eagles.
Now, away from the demands of international football, his life has entered another chapter.
The biggest question surrounding Troost-Ekong’s conversion is also the one for which there is currently no documented answer.
Why Islam?
The available evidence confirms the Shahadah. It confirms the location and his presence in Doha. It also indicates his desire to learn more about the religion.
It does not, however, explain the personal journey that brought him there.
Until Troost-Ekong speaks about that journey himself, the circumstances behind his decision remain private.
For now, what is known is simple: the former Super Eagles captain has embraced Islam in Doha, marking a significant personal development in the life of one of Nigeria’s most experienced footballers.
