They have many things in common. From making consious Music to aspiring to rule their nations to save it from bad leadership, the late legendary Singer, Fela Kuti and Haitian music great, Wyclef Jean appear to have had similar calings.
The multiple grammy award winner has now released a new single which he suprisingly names ‘Fela Kuti’ ahead of his 8th studio album.
“I decided to name it Fela Kuti because for me, I feel like we be thinking of [Bob] Marley, we give a lot of people from our past props, so when the kids hear Fela Kuti, I really want them to Google it,” Wyclef disclosed in an interview.
He revealed further “Fela Kuti studied jazz in England. Wyclef studied jazz at Vailsburg High School. Fela Kuti then went back to his country and tried to help his country by running for president. Wyclef, you know, did the same thing. Then, Fela, through all his obstacles and all that, his music is what pillared him right back to the top. He understood the strongest way to help politically was to make sure the music was bangin.’ So for me, the same way kids can have songs called ‘Wyclef Jean’ who are influenced by me, I want kids to know who Fela is and what he means.”
The upcoming album which is titled Carnival III: The Fall & Rise of a Refugee is set for release on September 15 exactly 20 years after Wyclef dropped his first solo album.
Fela Anikulapo Kuti is one of Africa’s biggest musical exports who has had his songs sampled by some of the world’s top acts including Jay Z, Nas and Kendrick Lamar.
