US Embassy Expresses Deep Concerns on Onnoghen’s Suspension, Urges Due Process
The United State of America Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria has in the late hours of today Saturday 26th January 2019 come out to lend a voice to the reactions trailing the suspension of the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The US Embassy in the statement published on its Website, expressed deep concerns on the impact of the recent action by the president, stating clearly that the President failed to get the support of the Legislative arm of government before making such a big decision few days to the 2019 polls which could disrupt the current peaceful electioneering process.
“The Embassy of the United States is deeply concerned by the impact of the executive branch’s decision to suspend and replace the Chief Justice and head of the judicial branch without the support of the legislative branch on the eve of national and state elections.” U.S Embassy expressed.
It was also noted in the statement that the decision by the executive has raised a lot dust in the public domain with worries of undermining the independence of the judicial branch. They referred these reactions by Nigeria as determination to see to credible elections.

“We note widespread Nigerian criticism that this decision is unconstitutional and that it undermines the independence of the judicial branch. That undercuts the stated determination of government, candidates, and political party leaders to ensure that the elections proceed in a way that is free, fair, transparent, and peaceful – leading to a credible result.” The statement reads.
The U.S Embassy finally urged the quick, peaceful resolve of the case in conformity with the laws of the land and reiterated that due process has to be adhered to by the concerned quarters.
The America body wrote:
“We urge that the issues raised by this decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully in accordance with due process, full respect for the rule of law, and the spirit of the Constitution of Nigeria. Such action is needed urgently now to ensure that this decision does not cast a pall over the electoral process.”
